Links and Experimental Material Here we have thumbnail reproductions of the three sets of images used in the experiment presented on subexpt.htm. They are links to both bmp and jpg format images. The bmp images were used in the experiment but viewers might prefer to download the considerably smaller jpg files. Jpg files are associated with the thumbnails. Click the number alongside each thumbnail to view the bmp version. Alongside each primary thumbnail is a link to additional information if the ad is discussed elsewhere on this site. Click on each thumbnail in turn to see the differences in the three sets of images. Note that no guidance is given as to the changes that were made. You will have to look carefully to detect these. You will then realise why the subjects in the experiment did not realise they were examining 'subliminal' images. The size of the linked image is the size used in the experiment. These are not a standard size as the material was extracted from real ads, whose size and structure was not under the control of the experimenters. The thumbnails with the suffix A are the original ad extracts, those with suffix B have the embedded image modified so that it is no longer meaningful, those with suffix C were the control condition in which a 'neutral' portion of the image, roughly equal in size to the embedded image, has been modified. This combination of changes allows one to state whether differences in judgements were due simply to changes or to meaninful content within the images. Judgements of sets A and C should be the same if the secondary or 'subliminal' image was meaningful. Judgements for sets B and C should be the same if it is meaningluess changes that influence judgements. The experimental results favoured the view that participants responded to the 'subliminal' content and were not influenced by simple changes in the same manner as they were influenced by the embedded image.
In the links presented below, A B and C are links to relevant JPG images. Underneath these, links D E and F are the corresponding BMP images (those used in the experiment). The BMP images are roughly 20 times larger than the JPG images and will take correspondingly longer to download. It should be possible to open all three images for the purpose of comparison on on almost any monitor with a 14 inch screen or greater. 1A 1D Click here for additional commentary on the ad from which image Click here for additional commentary on the ad from which image 1 was taken.
